Meanwhile, Peter Jackson's version stayed closest to the source material and left its Balrog's wings ambiguous. Regardless of the wings, though, portraying the Balrog as a master of sorcery would have done wonders for either adaptation of the demon.

Maybe it's because my first exposure to the Balrog was through a combination of the Ralph Bakshi cartoon from 1978 and the Type VI Demon (Balor) from AD&D, which was partially based on the Balrog (among others). I have some issues with Jackson, but when you compare the two scenes it's breathtaking how much Bakshi missed the mark completely.
